So I got to day three before missing one, which is a little sad.  K had a nasty case of pink-eye, and I was at FNM for half the night(3-0-1).  But my shirt came in!

2-2 at FNM with Esper Control

Lost back to back games 1-2 to Mono Black and RG Monsterous.  Mono Black is just an awful matchup for Esper.  RG isn’t too bad unless you fail to draw a single Hero’s Downfall or Detention Sphere, and he decides to run Ruric Thar in his maindeck.  Went 2-0 against BG Rock and UW Heroic though.

Standard UR Control

I’m a few days late here, but this is the deck I played last FNM for 3rd place, 3-1.

2 Aetherling
2 Prescient Chimera
3 Frostburn Weird

2 Jace, Architect of Thought

1 Anger the Gods
4 Mizzium Mortars
2 Shock
3 Magma Jet
1 Lightning Strike
1 Annihilating Fire
2 Izzet Charm
2 Syncopate
2 Essence Scatter
2 Dissolve
2 Divination
2 Inspiration
1 Thoughtflare
1 Opportunity

4 Steam Vents
4 Izzet Guildgate
1 Encroaching Wastes
8 Island
8 Mountain

4 Goblin Electromancer
3 Young Pyromancer
2 Guttersnipe
2 Lightning Strike
1 Annihilating Fire
1 Counterflux
1 Izzet Staticaster
1 Pithing Needle

It worked better than I thought it would, but definitely wasn’t perfect.  I didn’t get more Anger of the Gods until right before the event, and didn’t have time to put more in.  The semi-transformational sideboard actually worked okay and won me a couple games that night, despite being a toss in when I realized my entire deck was just burn and counters and didn’t want to just board into more of them. Generally, you’d cut the Anger and 5-6 drops, and it helped me a lot against Mono Red(though just having more Anger would be even better there) and against a Mono Green Ramp deck I faced in the first round that I just raced postboard. Pithing Needle can come in against Elspeths and Maze’s Ends, Counterflux is really good at making sure an opposing Aetherling doesn’t land, and Izzet Staticaster is surprisingly good in the aggressive matches as well as against control.  It mops up Cleric tokens, Soldier Tokens, and Elemental tokens nicely, and still kills Young Pyromancer and Firefist Striker.

Third place at my first FNM post-Innistrad with Weird Science

3-1, only loss was to mono red.

Changed my old Master Grixis build into UR Control, and decided to try out Frostburn Weirds.  I proceeded to start singing Weird Science every time I hit with one all night, much to my amusement.  Beat Mono Green Ramp and two other Izzet decks, one Control with Spellheart Chimera, and one with Electromancer/Young Pyromancer/Guttersnipe and such.  I’ll post a full list sometime this weekend.

FNM 8.30.13, 3-1 for third place.

Keepin’ it short this time.  Played Master Grixis again, with a few more tweaks. Moved the third Mizzium to the main and added in a Rolling Temblor to help deal with all the tiny little aggro creatures.

Addicted to EDH: Hidden Gems in Commander #4

Welcome to part 4 of my Hidden Gems series! Once again, I’ll do my best to show off a mix of cards from old and new sets, with special attention paid to cards which step outside their color’s traditional portion of the color pie.

1. Preacher

Preacher is one of…

Evangelize is actually a killer card from Time Spiral block, based off of the effect of Preacher.  It’s more expensive, but protecting a 1/1 from removal takes a lot, too

3-1 for fourth place again with Master Grixis last night.

Red apparently infested our LGS last night.

R1: Josh with Boros Aggro, 1-2

Drew a whole lotta lands when he was on the play Games 1 and 2. Not a whole lot to see here.

R2: Wheels with …Boros Aggro, 2-0.

Felt vindicated these games after the last one. Jace did a ton of work keeping blockers back both games, Aetherling and Master cleaned up.

R3: Cody with Rakdos Midrange, 2-1.

Well, at least it wasn’t Boros again. The deck seemed pretty interesting, and I had to two for one myself to get rid of a couple Master of Cruelties, but his other threats weren’t to pressing and I could take a little more time removing them. The loss G2 was off a mulligan to four and not really getting off the ground with it.

R4: Brian on Spellslinger Red, 2-0.

Not really sure what to call the deck.  It’s mono red, but the normal curve toppers were removed for Young Pyromancer and Guttersnipe, with a few more cheap burn spells thrown in to synergize with them. Fortunately, I’d rather face down extra X/1’s and X/2’s over a Thundermaw any day, and Slaughter Games took out the only annoyance he had(Chandra’s Phoenix).

Updated decklist after the jump.
